Water Quality Control Facilities
Project Name: West Area Water Quality Control Facility Improvements
The West Area Water Quality Control Facility (WQCF) treats excess combined sewage that exceeds system treatment and storage capability. Combined sewer flows are transported to R.M. Clayton Water Reclamation Center (WRC) during dry weather conditions for treatment. During storm events, combined sewer flows are stored in the West Area Tunnel for treatment when downstream treatment capacity is available. When the R.M. Clayton WRC s operating at capacity and no additional storage is available, combined sewer flows are diverted to the West Area WQCF. The capacity of the West Area WQCF is 85 MGD. The treatment consists of fine screening through rotary drum screens, grit removal in four vortex separators with grit classifiers, high rate compressed media filtration, disinfection with sodium hypochlorite, and dechlorination with sodium bisulfite. These upgrades for the West Area WQCF will ensure more efficient filter operation.
The scope of this project includes:
Upgrading equipment in the sludge thickening and dewatering facilities
Modifying filter compression plate to prevent loss of media from the filter cells
Improving Pak Scan Control system used to control filter actuators
Making improvements to the sedimentation basin
Repairing, replacing and improving various electrical equipment, performing arc flash study
Repairing or replacing chemical system equipment
Installing powered permanent samplers for upstream and downstream sample points
Installing Foxboro software updates
Justification:
Improves overall plant reliability and efficiency
Replaces old and obsolete equipment
Facilitates compliance with permit effluent discharge limits
